CaribWorldNews, BASSETEERE, St. Kitts, Tues. Jan. 26, 2010: Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas and the ruling St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party seemed last night poised to return to power in the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis last night.
Early reports indicate the SKNLP was leading in six of the eight constituencies it contested. The main opposition People`s Action Movement lead in the 1 constituency at 11 p.m. Results from constituency 8 was still unavailable.
Yesterday`s election drew a very heavy turnout throughout all 8 constituencies and when polls closed there were still long lines. The polls opened at 7 a.m. and closed10 hours later.
The Electoral Commission on Monday indicated that 32, 766 persons are eligible to cast ballots in the election with 6,119 less than had been able to do so in the 2004 elections when here were 38, 865 registered voters.
In Nevis, Premier Vance Armory seemed the likely winner from yesterday`s election where at least 7,000 persons were registered to vote.
The elections were monitored by observers from the Organization of American States (OAS), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Commonwealth.
