Guyana Opposition Head Retains Post

CaribWorldNews, GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Tues. Aug. 25, 2009: Robert Corbin has been returned as the head of Guyana`s main opposition party, the People`s National Congress.

Corbin beat out attorney Winston Murray with 614 votes to 223 votes to be returned as head of the PNC. He told BBC Caribbean that his immediate focus is re-uniting the PNCR.

However, several delegates who backed Murray alleged they were denied the right to vote, and other supporters were abruptly demoted from the status of eligible voting delegates to passive observers. Corbin`s re-election comes just months after he suffered a heart attack and had to be rushed to the U.S. for medical care.

Murray`s election would have been historic as he would have become the first non-black to lead the pre-dominantly black-supported party.
